Unit 5, Lesson 2, “Learning Courage from a Nonfiction Text,” reinforces the vocabulary word courage. Students will learn examples of courage from a nonfiction text that shows how a real person demonstrated courage. Additionally, students will create their own sentences that demonstrate their reading comprehension.

20 minutes

  • Spell, define, and give an example of courage
  • Compose 2 sentences that demonstrate comprehension of the word courage

  • Practice reading and conversation skills by sharing sentences with classmates

LESSON PROCEDURE

Today we will continue to learn about courage.

  1. Write courage on the board. 
  2. Ask students what we learned about courage from the last lesson. 
  3. Ask students to spell courage on their worksheets.
  4. Play the video: Malala Yousafzai: Fearless Voice for Education & Nobel Peace Laureate by the Nobel Peace Center (~ 3 min)
  5. Read the book Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai or play the video Read aloud of Malala’s Magic Pencil by Deanna Hardemion (~10 min)
  6. Ask students how Malala showed courage, then have them write their sentences on their worksheets.
  7. Tell the students that one way they can show courage is by speaking to the whole class. Tell the students that each student will read one of their sentences aloud to the class. Circle the room to allow each student to practice reading their sentence aloud to the teacher, then have each student read their sentence aloud to the class.
